Next Round of Blogpac Grants

Bumped--Chris

State and local blogs are the way of the future. They provide local political news and analysis not available anywhere else, especially as media consolidation means fewer and fewer experienced political reporters and good stories. And they also help bring together activist communities, which can change the shape of an entire race. (See Lieberman, CT, or Allen, VA for examples).

Blogpac wants to support that work. As previously diaried, we are offering a series of grants to community blogs to help cover hosting fees (one year of hosting, ie. $180, will be the standard amount). Blogpac is pleased to announce our second round of blog grants.

Read more about the grant criteria here. For the first time, we're also offering grants to group blogs not on a community platform - to enable them to switch. Congratulations to those in this round, and stay tuned for more grant awards in the future.

Like what we're doing and want to support it? Contribute to Blogpac monthly or one time only.

Thank you very, very much!! We'll keep doing our best to make y'all proud.

For those interested in getting a quick taste of what we're all about, check out our best of section for our timeless classics.

I completely agree with what Laura has to say about the power of state/local blogs. In the few months we've been highly active we're already starting to meet demands for local journalism and helping networking progressive activists.

Actually SLJ (3.00 / 1)

Actually SLJ, I just got off the phone with Republican Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito's people and she's offering us big money to begin writing positive things about her instead of all the negative things we've been writing about her and her voting record. I'm talking BIG MONEY. Plus she'll put us on the rightwing corporate welfare rolls that people like Pajamas Media and other righty bloggers are on.

I'm kidding. We're very excited to be included in this round and look forward to becoming a full-fledged group blog!

Media Consolidation? (none / 0)

lpackard, I completely agree with you that local and state blogs are a great development and merely add the the tremendous choice we have online for not only political coverage and analysis, but for all news.

However, as Washington Post reporter, Frank Ahrens notes, if their is a trend it is deconsolidation.

"Viacom split in two. Clear Channel is selling its TV stations and one-third of its radio stations. The New York Times sold its TV stations. The Knight Ridder newspaper chain dissolved. Tribune sold TV stations and may yet be broken up. Walt Disney sold its radio stations. Emmis Communications sold its TV stations. Wave after wave of deconsolidation."

Sorry to go on a slight tangent, but I do some consulting with the NAB on the media ownership issue.  It is because we have so many choices online and with cable and satellite, that the FCC needs to update the rules to allow local broadcasters to survive.

Thank You! (none / 0)

And I just want to say, things are gonna get interesting here in New Mexico with Rep. Heather Wilson and/or Sen. Pete Domenici involved in the sacking of US Attorney David Iglesias.

Another black eye for the NM Republican party.
